Three cricket formats and major tournaments

To understand cricket betting, it helps to know the difference between the three formats. T20 is the shortest and fastest — each team faces only 20 overs, so the outcome can change at any moment. ODI gives each team 50 overs, making strategy more important. In a five-day Test match, patience and tactics matter most — and a draw is also a valid result, unlike in T20 or ODI.

BPL draws the most interest from Bangladeshi fans. Every winter, the BPL franchise matches generate a great deal of excitement. IPL also attracts strong enthusiasm from Bangladeshi viewers. Interest in the betting markets around Bangladesh Tigers' performances grows further during major events like the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy.

Odds differ across formats. In T20, either team can win at any point, so odds tend to stay relatively close. In Test cricket, odds are set based on a five-day analysis, so larger differences can appear.

How cricket betting differs from football and other sports

bigtaka sports betting markets across different sports

Cricket offers more varied markets than almost any other sport. In a single match you can bet not just on the winner but also on the toss, each wicket, and the runs scored in every over. In football, betting mainly covers the match result, number of goals and goalscorers, and the game ends within 90 minutes.

In cricket, Test matches run for five days, so longer-term markets are also available. Sports like tennis, badminton or kabaddi generally have fewer markets. Sports betting is primarily for entertainment — understanding the rhythm of each sport makes the betting experience more enjoyable.

On bigtaka you can bet on football and several other sports in addition to cricket. This page, however, focuses mainly on cricket markets.

Popular betting markets with everyday examples

Cricket betting has many different types of markets. Below are seven popular markets, each with a brief explanation.

Match Winner

The simplest market — choose which of the two teams will win. Example: if you think Team B will beat Team A, place your bet on Team B.

Toss Winner

Which team will win the toss before the match starts — odds here are usually almost equal, as the toss is entirely random.

Top Batsman

Which batter will score the most runs in an innings or across the full match — you pick one player from within a team.

Total Runs — Over/Under

Will the total runs in an innings be above (over) or below (under) a set number — example: will total runs in a T20 exceed 165?

Top Bowler

Which bowler will take the most wickets — pitch conditions and weather play a big role in this market.

Multi Bet (accumulator)

Multiple matches or events can be combined into a single bet. You win only if every selection is correct — one wrong pick and the entire bet is lost.

Runs in a Specific Over

Example: how many runs will Team A score in the first six overs — this market is decided by assessing a team's aggressive batting style during the powerplay.

How to read and understand odds

There are three common odds formats in sports betting — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same probability; only the way they are written differs. Two examples below show all three formats side by side.

Example 1 — Team A wins

Decimal: 3.00 | Fractional: 2/1 | American: +200
If you bet ৳1,000 and Team A wins, your total return is ৳3,000 (৳2,000 profit + your ৳1,000 stake back). If Team A loses, you lose ৳1,000.

In decimal format the number is a direct multiplier of your stake — ৳1,000 × 3.00 = ৳3,000. Fractional 2/1 means ৳2 profit for every ৳1 staked. American +200 means ৳200 profit on a ৳100 bet.

Example 2 — Team B (the favourite) wins

Decimal: 1.80 | Fractional: 4/5 | American: -125
If you bet ৳1,000 and Team B wins, your total return is ৳1,800 (৳800 profit).

American minus odds (-125) show how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit — here ৳125. A favourite's decimal odds are always below 2.00.

Live betting — odds shift with every wicket and over

Betting while a match is in progress is called live or in-play betting. It is particularly well suited to cricket, because odds update after every wicket or boundary.

Say Team A has lost two wickets — Team A's odds of winning will immediately lengthen (they become the underdog) while Team B's odds shorten. Conversely, two consecutive sixes will bring Team A's odds back down.

In a T20, the required run rate over the final five overs and the number of wickets remaining are all reflected instantly in live odds. In ODI or Test cricket these changes happen more gradually because the game has a longer span.

Live betting requires quick decisions, so having a prior understanding of the markets makes it easier to decide while watching the game.

Some useful tips before you start betting

Betting is purely for entertainment — it is not a source of income. Following the tips below will keep the experience positive.

  • Set a budget in advance: Decide how much you are willing to spend on entertainment before you start. Stay within that limit and do not place extra bets to try to recover losses.
  • Start with one market: The Match Winner market is the simplest for beginners. Once you are comfortable, move on to other markets gradually.
  • Be careful with multi bets: The potential payout on a multi bet is higher, but one wrong selection and the whole bet is lost. Avoid adding too many selections.
  • Do not rush in live betting: In-play odds change fast — make decisions calmly rather than being led by emotion.
  • Compare odds: Look carefully at the odds across different markets for the same match. In decimal format, a higher number means the outcome is considered less likely.
  • Take breaks: Avoid betting for long stretches without stopping. Betting is a game — enjoying it is the main point.

Common questions about cricket betting

Frequently asked questions about cricket markets and odds.

T20 is the easiest for beginners because the game is short and results come quickly. ODI is comparatively longer but the markets are still straightforward. Test matches require five-day analysis and a draw is also a valid result, making them the most complex. It is best to start with the Match Winner market in T20 matches.

In a multi bet, several selections are combined into one. The decimal odds of each selection are multiplied together to get the total odds. For example: three bets at odds of 1.40, 1.60 and 1.90 give total odds of 1.40 × 1.60 × 1.90 = 4.26 (approximately). On a ৳100 bet you would get back ৳426 — but all three selections must be correct. If even one is wrong, the entire ৳100 is lost.

Odds change fastest when a wicket falls — especially in T20 if a wicket drops in the first over or the batting team's best batter is dismissed. Odds also shift during the powerplay (first six overs), middle overs and death overs depending on the run rate. If rain stops play or a DLS target revision occurs, odds can change significantly.

In an over/under market you bet on whether a specific number of events will be more or less than a set figure. In cricket this is usually the total runs, total wickets or total boundaries. Example: will total runs in a T20 innings exceed 165 (over) or fall short (under) — pick whichever you think is more likely.

The types of markets are essentially the same — Match Winner, Toss, Top Batsman and Over/Under are available across all tournaments. However, Bangladeshi fans are naturally more familiar with local players, so interest in BPL tends to be higher. IPL and ICC tournaments feature the world's top players, which brings a wider variety of markets.
